How to build a LOW MAINTENANCE timber decking base
It’s finally time to start building our decking! We’ve been delayed so much by the weather but we’re finally ploughing on with this project. As we’re building this on a North facing wall in the North East of England we’re really thinking about long term maintenance on this one. I really want a timber deck and I’m fairly confident this will have a life span of at least 20 years. Possibly more. Today we’re building the base then in part 2 we’ll finish everything off and talk more about finishes, wood treatment etc. Enjoy!

    I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for...

For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

    Out of curiosity as an Australian I wonder if someone can share some insight in the UK that out of 100 high school students in your particular area how many of such graduates become builders in housing construction, also if they are truly committed/dedicated/trained to become the best possible workers in their trade? In Sydney a larger portion of local society than before (3-4x) aspire to tertiary education for self-actualising careers meaning that much of the new generation staff, young apprentices fresh out of high school, as I have noticed tend to be the bottom of the barrel. It doesn't happen every day but regularly young staff turn up to work intoxicated from the night before, watching Tiktok or other social media while vaping in the worksite when unsupervised, poor eating and sleeping habits, are generally empty-headed, very sloppy, lazy, resistant or unwilling to learn new things, let alone how to do a task the best way possible. It's so frustrating to have such younger colleagues that many companies simply discriminate against whole generations. Out of dozens of young staff I have been senior to many lack a sense of professionalism, pride in workmanship, integrity, honesty, etc. Instead are very much depraved, living in fear, tyrannised by the fear of joblessness, and addicted to money (wages) mainly for the sake of entertainment and maintaining addiction to petty vices including dating apps. But I also attribute this culture to the top of the food chain, down to aggressive client demands, and deceptive/exploitative builders who will do anything to cut costs, even evade costs altogether by exploiting staff. Which any worker with common sense will sense the hopelessness and untrustworthiness of remaining in this industry built on distrust. Shamefully the end product says it all.

    When cutting wood too big for the blade, instead of turning it twice and cutting the underside, turn it once, line the blade with the previous cut and go for it. You’ll find you don’t get the step in the Final Cut.

    Luckily can get free wood beams and (decent enough) boards from work so did a huge 24x8ft deck during covid. Also scavenged decent screws and nails, so only really paid for sealer and some of that tape… luckily the Amazon seller sent me double the rolls I ordered so saved loads. 😅 Think the boards will need to be changed in another 7/10 years.

    As British citizen it does my head in that our country has such terrible service considering 100 years ago people from all over Europe and Americas used to seek out British ocean liners to travel on because they provided grwat service. Today our businesses and companies- at least id say 80% - are just about, get money, screw customer. If i have no issue with a company i feel like i got fantastic service when actually its just bare minimum expectation has been met. You really notice this if you go to other countries. Looks like building industry is just churning out pish but i guess it doesn’t mayter because beggars cant be choosers and we are way short on houses and always will be until we accept house prices will need to come down

    Re: recent articles about PM2. This is basically the establishment trying to protect their profits and subjugate consumers. Rags like the Guardian are basically their propaganda vessels. Power stations, including biomass plants are 35% efficient, modern wood burners up to 94%. I don't see any rush to ban biomass fired power stations, indeed they are touted as part of the solution. A gust of wind can whip more particles up FFS.

    Great deck. Only thing I'd do differently is - those holes cut for the ventilation in the joist look to be somewhat toward the bottom, which is the bit of timber in tension. Those holes (if you have to have to have them) really should be dead center in the timber (height wise); and need reinforcing with four 'floor joist stiffeners' (basically a long angle section that you fit to reinforce the joist where you've done the hole).

  • @DlStreamnet
    @DlStreamnet День назад

    Also, how nuts is this weather, lol?

  • @DlStreamnet

    Did you consider, once you'd dug the holes, to just fit some galv m24 threaded rod? You went through ALOT of effort when once the hole was dug, you could have had a "more permanent" solution to all the painting and cut timber etc...
